The inner width of the wheelset of 23 mm is perfect for running wider tubeless tires with reduced air pressure. This is an important component of Total System Efficiency (TSE), an approach to increasing speed on constantly changing roads and riding conditions. TSE focuses in particular on overcoming specific speed barriers: Wind resistance, gravity, rolling resistance and vibration losses. Zipp's ABLC Sawtooth technology uses an intricate dimple pattern to improve aero efficiency. Zipp's use of hookless (straight) rims in the 404 Firecrest is an integral part of "Making You Faster". With hookless, the transition between tire and rim is more seamless and aerodynamic. Zipp's hookless rims have more efficient resin distribution, which means lighter and stronger wheels. An outdoor test commissioned by Zipp has shown the advantages of the Zipp TSE in practice. With the new 404 Firecrest with 25 mm tires, a complete system of rider and wheel weighing 85 kg requires 286 watts to maintain a speed of 40 km/h. This is a saving of 4 watts. This is a saving of 4 watts compared to the predecessor model 404 Firecrest. With a profile height of 58 millimeters, the Zipp 404 wheels have been the right choice for road races, time trials or fast tours in varied terrain for decades. Equipped with the latest technologies, the current generation is ready for use on modern road bikes and seamlessly continues this legacy. At 23 millimetres, the inner rim width has increased significantly compared to its predecessors. As a result, the rims not only offer wider tires optimum support at low air pressures, they also integrate the tires into the rim profile in an extremely aerodynamically efficient manner. In addition, the hookless design creates an almost seamless transition between the tire and rim flanks. The elimination of the hooks also makes the rim flanges more robust in the event of punctures and contributes to the significant weight saving compared to the previous versions. In combination with further optimizations in the structure of the carbon layers, the weight of the wheelset has been reduced to 1450 grams. An optimized rim bed ensures easier tire mounting.

Total System Efficiency (TSE)
The 404 wheels were developed using the TSE approach. The development goal was to find the best possible wheel design to overcome the speed barriers that exist under realistic riding conditions. These include wind resistance, gravity and rolling resistance as well as vibration losses in poor road conditions.

ABLC Dimples
The ABLC dimples (dimples on the outside of the rim) help to reduce air resistance and ensure very high crosswind stability, especially at larger angles of attack.

Zipp ZR1 hubs
The Zipp ZR1 hubs were developed in two years of development work in Germany. Their outstanding feature is the extremely fine-toothed freehub body design of the rear hub with 66 engagement points per wheel revolution, which allows the ZR1 to respond to acceleration without delay. The fine toothing is realized via a system of 6 pawls, 3 of which engage in a staggered manner. The design of the seals is based on the high-end Cognition hubs and provides more protection and durability with a larger dust cap behind the freehub body and better seals.
