For the next development stage of the hubs for our professional Firecrest wheels, we turned to the engineers in the German development office in Schweinfurt. The result is the ZR1 hub set for disc and rim brake wheels. This hub set has an improved seal design and faster response thanks to 66 points of engagement of the freehub body. Our engineers spent more than two years developing the ZR1. Proving the longevity of the hubset involved more than 58,500 km of test rides, which were part of 3,222 hours of testing. They contain central technologies of the Zipp Cognition hubs. The design of the seals is based on Cognition, with a larger dust cap behind the freehub body and better seals for more protection. The bearing size is also the same as the Cognition, although the Cognition uses premium bearings. The six pawls are offset to work in two groups of three pawls. Three pawls engage at any given time. This design creates a quick engagement feel with 66 points of engagement. The freehub body is designed so that the pawls remain in place for disassembly to simplify maintenance. Zipp hubs are designed to use J-bend spokes, the most popular type of spokes today. J-Bend, widely used & easier to replace.
