Shimano is following suit and is also using a 12-speed drivetrain for the XTR M9101 groupset. In contrast to the competition, however, the Japanese company gives cyclists the choice of whether they prefer a maximum gear range (10-51 teeth) or a more closely graduated cassette with smaller cadence jumps when shifting (10-45 teeth). The latter should suit XC and marathon racers in particular, who can conserve their power reserves by pedaling in the optimum frequency range. For riders who require a particularly stiff wheel, Shimano offers a 10-45 cassette with 11 gears. This is designed for a specially designed XTR hub, which uses the space freed up by the omitted 12th sprocket for a wider hub flange.
Smooth and precise shifting has always been a hallmark of Shimano cassettes. In the Hyperglide cassettes of the last generations, the sprockets were positioned in such a way that the chain runs extremely smoothly and with little vibration, especially when shifting to a larger sprocket. The XTR M9101 cassette introduces Hyperglide+. Thanks to this technology, shifting now runs just as smoothly even when shifting into a heavier gear and is 1/3 faster than with the CS-M9000 cassette.
In the construction of the cassette, Shimano relies on a material mix of steel, titanium and aluminum for the sprockets. While the smallest sprockets with the lowest chain wrap and highest load are made of steel, the middle sprockets are made of titanium and the largest sprockets are made of aluminum. This load-appropriate use of materials leads to even wear of the cassette and also extends the service life of the chain. The cassette is held together by an aluminum spider.
Our new 12-speed cassette with 10-51 teeth borders on magic. We have increased the gear ratio, made it even more resilient and 30% stiffer - all at an even lower weight. Don't tell anyone, but our secret lies in the intelligent use of titanium, aluminum and steel.
