Extensive testing of Stan's rims and competitors' rims has revealed the biggest advantage of the successful Flow MK3 from 2016 is the 6069 aluminum construction, which is 10-15% stronger and more stable than the commonly used 6061 aluminum. The radially more compliant rim design and 29mm internal width also tested very well. More surprising was the stability of the classic Flow EX rim, whose triple hollow chamber design allows for internal reinforcement of the rim. Although the rim is not made of the most durable aluminum and is rather narrow by today's standards, the rim was able to impress with amazing stability in the tests.
By combining the best of both designs, adding a thicker wall thickness to the spokes and giving it a "BBQ" shot-peened finish, Stan's created a rim that surpassed all test goals and presents itself as much more impact resistant and stable than any other rim: the new Flow EX3.
In addition, the Flow EX3 is designed to prevent air pressure loss: even ridden with a tire insert, larger impacts can cause the sidewall to fold, resulting in air loss and eventual malfunction. The internal Tiebeam connecting brace and patented low-profile sidewalls of the Flow EX3 rim, prevent folding or buckling and ensure structural stability, and therefore air retention, better than any other rim, even under the hardest impacts.
With the Tiebeam Triple hollow chamber design, a significant increase in stability is achieved with only a small increase in weight. The 27.5" Flow EX3 rim weighs 580 gr., the 29" rim weighs only 618 gr.
Like every Stan's rim, the Flow EX3 is also easy to set up as tubeless. Due to the sophisticated "Bead Socket" technology, it only needs a floor pump. Optimized for 2.35" to 2.8" tires, the Flow EX3 is the evolution of the Flow line, aimed at the most aggressive driving. Every Downhill World Cup and Enduro World Series pass, every hour of testing and improving, is in the new Flow EX3.
